Our New Skater Program

So you want to learn to skate and play roller derby? You’ve come to the right place!

We regularly organize free open trainings. This is the perfect opportunity to get a taste of skating and roller derby. You can join at any time, as there is no fixed start date. Based on your experience and skills, our trainers will help determine when and how you can join the program.

No gear? No problem! We can lend you skates and protective gear for your first few trainings.

Every new skater starts by learning the basics: a strong skating posture, skating fast with smooth, long strides, coming to a full and controlled stop, doing crossovers, and most importantly falling safely. These are not the only skills you will learn, but they are essential on your journey to becoming a full-fledged roller derby skater.

As you grow more confident on your skates, we will introduce you to more derby-specific skills and the rules of the game. From there, a trainer will assess your progress and decide when you are ready for your first scrimmage. Once you reach that point, you are ready to join a team.

If you are interested in skating with us as an official rather than as a player, you are very welcome too. Officials can also follow the rookie program to develop the required skating skills and become familiar with the game.

In short, when you join Dom City Roller Derby, you can expect two practices a week where we will help you become a true wizard on skates. You will work on endurance, footwork, balance, confidence, and skating as part of a team, all within a friendly and supportive environment.

REQUIREMENTS

We strongly believe roller derby is for everyone; no matter your level of fitness, gender, background or bodytype, you are welcome! Our one requirement is that you are at least 18 years before you start skating with us.

GEAR AND SKATES

In order to play roller derby the following gear is required:

Need to borrow stuff? We have some gear available for our rookies’ first few trainings, so you don’t need to commit to buying skates or protection before you try the sport. Please come early if you need to borrow gear and/or skates. We do not lend out mouth guards.

Of course, once you’re hooked, you’ll want a nice pair of skates for yourself. In that case we recommend checking out Sucker Punch Skate Shop.
